I have a theoretical question. I have a loose footed main. With that in mind and knowing that the sail only contacts the boom in two locations, does the vang serve any purpose? I can tighten the luff with the Cunningham and the foot with the outhaul.

But some, as is obvious, prefer a tight rig. The forestay and backstay settings are experimentally arrived at, and from measuring a couple of local boats: I'm told that these figures vary according to what different sailmakers recommend.
