All,
I have a 76 dinette version and I have an electric bilge in 'er. On a
bachelor party trip with my brothers over to Catalina Island last May, the
wind died and I had to turn on the engine and power forward at approx. 4 or
5 kts. After about 30 minutes or so, one of my brothers went below and
freaked when he saw a few inches of water in the cabin below. I naturally
freaked myself and told him where the manual switch was for the bilge and
had him flip it on. Water started pumping out (I assume) but then it kept
filling once the switch was let off. Turns out, with the forward push of
the engine power and the approx. 100 lb. cooler we had loaded on the rear
lazarette, the drain hole we had in the rear lazarette was submerged and
therefore creating a siphon for the bilge discharge. After moving the
cooler, things leveled out but I decided to redo the piping of the bilge
discharge and drilled a new discharge hole well above the water line in the
rear lazarette and attached a new outlet piece. I then attached the bilge
discharge line to this outlet rather than having it dump into another
compartment in order to drain out. I think it is the best way to go for
anyone with this setup to avoid any possible back siphon into the bilge.
I've had no problems since. Also, maybe I shouldn't have put that 100 lb.
cooler in the back of the boat, but we're sailing here right?? :0)

Pat,
I have an outboard so can not speak to the packing gland but my 76 has
had very little water in the bilge since I reseated all of my windows. A
driving rain will leave a cup or two and I assume that comes from the
companion way.

This is my 5th season with my 1978 C27. I do not have an electric bilge
pump. I have the original manual pump in the side of the Port lazarette.
For 28 years the PO and myself , each time we go aboard, would give the
pump 3 or 4 pumps and empty the bilge. Most time NO water. This year,
since launch 5 weeks ago, I have to pump it 10 plus times ?? We have had
rainy days but ?
My question-- how does water enter the bilge? Packing box or ?
