Wow, yesterday was a great day sailing on The Chesapeake Bay! We have been
suffering like much of the nation a heat wave. This last week (I was out of
town before that) we had tempos in upper 90s and the “feels like” was 105°+.
Sailing was out for sure. But yesterday the temps were in the mid 80s for a
high and humidity was way down, so sailing was a must. The wife and I went
out about 10 am and sailed until almost 5pm. We covered nearly 24 miles
just day sailing. The wind started at about 10 and then gradually increased
to 15+Kn by our return.

One interesting point I have learned about my “new” Cat 27 is that she likes
to run wing & wing! My previous boat was work to sail dead downwind, she
didn’t like wing & wing at all and without constant attention to sails and
wind she would gybe. But the Cat loves it, set the sails and she will fly
downwind. Yesterday was a good example; we returning and rounded the Bay
side #1A mark on a broad reach. We were in line with about 6 other boats,
all much bigger (30-50’). We were losing ground on a broad reach but when
we turned dead downwind and I gybed the main over to wing & wing we took
off, leaving all the other boats in our dust. The wind at this point was
about 12Kn and we were making about 5.5-6.7 (some surfing I suppose) as we
passed all those big boats. IN fairness, most were big cruising boats, not
racers.

This makes me wonder how easy she will be with an ASym spinnaker…maybe next
year.
