That e-mail from the engineer is DEVASTATING. I had always liked the Fram
gripper thingy on the outside of the filter, and didn¹t much think about the
quality inside.

Just as an aside about hidden things and quality, there is an effect that
goes on with the ³big box² stores and certain manufacturers. To give a prime
example, if you buy a Kohler faucet set from your local retail plumbing
house or home furnishings store, and then go to Home Depot to buy the exact
same model (no difference in SKU, model number, etc.), and then bring them
home and take them apart, you will find that one has metal parts inside, and
the other plastic. In other words, the big box stores can sell you ³the same
product² at a much deeper discount because it¹s not the same product.
