David, I'm in the process of designing my own chain locker and hawsepipe
setup. I was planning to install a naval pipe to carry the chain down much
deeper under the V-berth and down toward the keel to keep weight off the bow
as much as possible. I'm curious to see your pictures and to find out where
you put your locker. If anyone out there has installed a naval pipe rather
than just letting chain drop down through a hawsepipe, I'm really baffled
about the one warning I keep seeing: I've read three or four times to make
sure that the bitter end of your chain gets attached to a nylon snubber line
to absorb the shock in case the entire 200' or whatever runs out, and also
that the bitter end of that nylon line gets attached to a solid eye inside
the chain locker on a structural fitting rather than just linked to a big
bolt or knot that won't fit out the hawsepipe. Okay, that much I understand
(and we're not talking about a chain snubber line that hooks to the chain
and ties to your deck cleat or bollard-this is the bitter end of the
chain/rode).

What I don't get is if you use a naval pipe to feed all that chain deep
below and you want your eye attachment point above the waterline (another
warning I've seen, so when you tear a huge chunk out of your hull you still
have a fighting chance of floating), how in the world do you get the nylon
rode back up the naval pipe and to the eye? It seems like the nylon rode,
if it were always coming out of the naval pipe, would certainly get in the
way of the chain sliding smoothly down the pipe. Has anyone on this list
done this or seen it done?

I Installed a windlass with an anchor pulpit on my 27. Additionally I
created an anchor chain locker with hause pipe and have 200' of chain with a
Delta anchor on the end. I have an additional 250' of three strand rode I
can attach to the end of the chain if needed. I also built a deck washdown
system that allows me to wash the chain and anchor. I have pictures if you
are interested.

Feel free to contact me [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please reference "anchor
windlass" in the subject so I respond and don't delete it.

I can also help with the deep gouge if you are interested.

Sovereignty has a Freedom 15 inverter/charger system with a Link 2000
controller. I like the system and have pictures and experience with that
equipment. The important consideration in selecting an inverter is weather
it needs to be a true sign wave device and what type of equipment will it
power. If battery charging is the only consideration then about any three
stage charger will do, but one that shuts off completely is best because it
will not cook the batteries. Battery type (lead acid, gel, glass mat, etc.)
is another consideration.

I would like to install a shore power battery charging system. Any
suggestions on what make/model and where and how to install it?
