Chris, There are some very funny Seaman logs that Joke about " The officers that are breathing the 'Air' of the crewmen" .. meaning the smells of the Heads.
The Heads (two because it was expected that a crewman would use the LEE side) Were a Punishment duty for some men. Someone had to occasionally... wash down the gratings and timbers.. Not a nice job. So it often was a punishment/ A side Bar note.... In the movie " Master and Commander" In one of the battle scenes, there is a GUY setting at the heads while the boat goes into action. It's on screen for just an instant. You have to pause the show to see him.. But THERE he sets, pants down!.. The first time I saw it.. I damn near choked to death laughing... Next time you check the DVD out .. Watch for him.. The Director must have had a Nautical History Buff on the production staff.. I'll bet they are Still laughing about that one. Why would a skipper want all that flowing the length of the ship?
