Don, as a new Catalina 27 owner one year ago today (3/11/06), I too wanted
to be able to single hand, so Lazy Jacks were on my short list. I purchased
the medium Harken kit. Installation was with the mast up (see my website,
www.aeoluswestriver.net and check the 2007 sailing year). It was an easy
install just took longer aloft than I thought it would. After I installed
the Lazy Jacks I thought my sail handling was great but not so. The sail
would not drop under its own weight beyond about 1/3 height (about 10' up in
air remained). I rigged an inexpensive nylon cord attached to the sail head
so I could give a gentle tug to pull it down the remaining way. After that
the lazy jacks do the job well.

A Bimini is another story. A year ago I purchased a used Bimini from Mark
in LA from one of his salvaged 27s. I did not install it all summer,
instead I rigged it so I could use it. I have purchased, but not yet
installed a mid boom traveler. This allows the Bimini to move further aft
and provide more shade. With end boom traveler, the Bimini only shades the
forward end of the cockpit (better than nothing) and interferes with
winching sheets. When I install the new traveler I will be able to move the
Bimini far enough aft to make the shade cover more of the cockpit. But the
shade is great when used. It made summer not too hot.

Since I single-hand often, I am considering lazy jacks.
What says the group for choices/ideas? After that, installation tips?

Harken kit small (Model 252) about $200, Medium 253 - about $270, make your
own - $???, or other?
Loose-footed main has standard battens - not full.

Also... spouse insists on bimini for this summer. Can anyone be specific
about suggested source and dimensions chosen? This is for a tiller steered,
end boom sheeted main with aft cockpit traveler and split backstay.
