I believe your brother-in-law was at the helm at the time, right? There
could be many ways to tell the story.
For instance, I knew a skipper of a 45-footer who went below one pleasant
but dark night in the Chessy and left his son and a buddy at the helm,
drinking beer and watching the autopilot steer. They ran up a creek under
full sail and jammed her into the mud so bad that it took a sea-going tug
and about half a mile of cable to get her off, bending the rudder - - with
extreme prejudice - - in the process. What I never heard clearly was, who
programmed the autopilot.
