Lance,
Just race in a cruiser class where you get allowances for equipment we all strip off before going racing. The down side is it's never quite enough to make up for what you gave up. On flip side makes the hard core racers a little more humble, and occasionally when the hard core guys choose the wrong flyer to chase a cruiser corrects out over them. When that happens you just have to make sure the hard core racer admits he knows how he lost it, rather than blame the rating. BTW, when you can't win you take more chances. We had a guy with good skills racing a C22 heavy weight wing keel occasionally win over our resident national champion. If he had raced traditional tactics he could never make it to the top 25% of the fleet. Instead, he would take off on wild flyers hoping a wind would fill in for him that was stronger than main fleet was in. He was mid pack at best when he chased and covered but occasionally coming back from his flyer he couldn't be caught. He picked up one heck of a reputation since no one ever saw his flyers that didn't pan out, all they knew is they got really stomped on once in awhile. Wow, he can really read the wind.
