I must be doing something wrong cause I have never lost a fender, dinghy or 
boat now that I think of it I have never lost a horse.

Sure enough..
The Cow hitch also known as "Lark's Head" can be made secure by a simple 
trick..  Making it ..
The Pedigreed Cow hitch...   (Seen in several Knot books . I recommend "Pocket 
Guide to Knots and Splices by Des Pawson)

consider this the request then:  our first Chesapeake Bay Boyz raft-up I forgot 
to pull the 4 BRAND SPANKING NEW FENDERS in when we left the dock, and they 
ended up floating somewhere in the crab-pot mine field just inside the Patapsco 
at Gibson Island.  I thought I would never hear the end of it!  
 
(and now that I have brought it up again......)
