John,

ANY new sail should make it seem like you have a new boat.

Consider having the sacrificial covering removed and get a jib sock made. It
will cover any sail you hoist, when furled. And, when you replace sails in the
future, that will be one small expense you won't have to have.

  Listees

I am in the market for a new Genoa (I think). I am a cruiser (unless a boat
is going in my direction) and currently have a roller furling 150. I am
guessing that it is at least 18-20 years old. The boat is 25 years old. I
sail on the Chesapeake Bay. The current problem is that the stitching on the
sacrificial strip (covering) on the Genny has seen its last days. Currently
with the Genny deployed I look very ragged. I need to decide whether to have
it restitched or replace the strip or replace the sail. I am leaning toward
replacing the sail.

If I replace the Genny there are obvious things that I should consider, such
as type of fabric, weight, 130 vs 150, high cut vs deck sweeper, cost,
manufacturer, etc.

I have been advised by an "old salt" that if I switch to a 130 I will have a
"new" boat. I have not asked him to define what I would experience to make it
a "new" boat, but I'm in the process of doing so. (Old salt - see Mainsheet,
November 2007, Week Long Cruise, Gerry and Jane Ann Braddick and their 9th
Daughter - flying his new 130. Yep, he was passing me as I was taking his
picture and that is my excuse for letting him pass me!!)

Any comments, suggestions, experiences would be appreciated. I need help in
making a decision.

BTW - I worked with Dave Tierney on Friday am to help winterize his Celtic
Pride. Dave is doing well under the burden and stress of caring for his son
Adam. Your thoughts, prayers and comments have really helped.
