I think I have all the latest updates... sigh... The funny thing is
that Windows booted on this laptop via Apple Boot Camp doesn't have
the wireless card problem. Go figure :-)

Did you check the firmware on the access point? My AP actually had a
firmware upgrade not too long ago that specifically addressed AirPort
problems. Not being cool enough to actually own a MacBook, I have no
clue if those problems are the same as your problems :)
