Is this fixable in a way that still works with 1.4/5/6, or are we going to have to do split releases?
If they're just new methods, I don't see there being much of a problem. At worst on 1.4/5, the methods will never get called by the JVM. It may be worthwhile to run the test suite with both <= 5 and >= 6.
