I saw some messages mentioning Apache Solaris zones. So I was
wondering whether it is appropriate to use a zone for the project
build server?

Specifically Cayenne project releases are tested against 10 or so
different databases (Oracle, Sybase, DB2, etc.....), so our build
server has to have all those resource-hungry RDBMS installed and
running. It is probably unreasonable to expect Apache zones server to
be able to support all different project requirements and we will
continue using our existing servers outside the ASF, but I was
curious what the zones are normally used for?

That sounds like a reasonable use to me.

MyFaces uses zones to run continuum, which both builds nightlies as
well as runs the tests continously (and populates a maven repository).

I think we're also planning on eventually hosting our JSF examples in the zone.
