Hey Kevin,

This does not make you a jerk :-)

Maven is a pain in the neck to get your head wrapped around, but after you do its worth it (or at least it has been for me).

The IRC for maven tends to be very good too. The community is very helpful in general and IRC provides faster feedback.

irc.codehaus.org #maven.

Just for proof that maven is not all together straightforward the IRC header is 'Still, maybe 20% of the time, I don't feel that I'm using a tool so much as appeasing a petty god.' So they even have a sense of humor :-)

I'm no expert either but I'm glad to try to help with any questions.

TTFN,

You can also get a free copy of 'Better Builds With Maven' from here;

http://www.mergere.com/m2book_download.jsp

You can get it here;

http://tinyurl.com/paany

with my registration but I'm not sure how long that will last before
they force you to 'login' again. I get about 1 or 2 emails from them
a months for he joy of the book, I think there is an 'opt out' but
its not that annoying so I just delete them.

I reviewed the book while I was learning m2 and found it quite helpful.

Time for me to be a jerk, again.

If you are truly new to maven, the book isn't going to help you much. It's a start, but I found the only way I was able to get much of anything done
was to join the user list and post questions there.

There was recently a thread on the user list about how the book is not all
that great. Going beyond the constant back-patting and typographical
errors, it seems to lack cohesion. It reads almost like a cookbook, but is intended for beginners. Anyway, the authors have promised to take user feedback into consideration for the next revision. I just wouldn't expect
to be a maven guru after reading this is all.

FWIW, the authors are on the user list and are generally quite helpful.
