The Amherst Island trip was last weekend.
My report was suitably but coincidentally discreet.
While there we heard about abuse, and saw the
new posted rules. Our consensus was that the
rules should be stated more boldly and it would
be good to have someone enforcing them. We
saw several photographers ignoring the 5 meter
rule and one ignoring the no-flash rule. I told the
flash user to stop, but he made no reply as he left.
Perhaps he did not even speak English, being of
east Asian descent. The bird being subjected to
close observers and flashes did open its eyes and
move its head, which was more evidence of disturbance
than the others showed. There were plenty of people in the
woods, more cars on Saturday -- including a small school
bus -- than Linda had seen before. Thanks to Ann's
keen eyes, we saw a total of 3 individual owls in the
woods, but most people only saw 2. I enjoyed it, but
don't need to return soon.
