This evening's rain and dropping temperatures seemed like a promising
combination, so just now I stepped out to the vernal pool in my
wooded yard and directed a flashlight beam down through the duckweed
onto the leafy bottom, where I could see that the spotted salamanders
(Ambystoma maculatum) have begun their annual gathering.
Lately, Barred Owls have been hooting down in the gulf, day and night.
