John saw 3 Buffles on the Mill Pond, along Rte. 90 here in Union Springs
today, the first of the season. They're always a welcome sight. Mallards &
Gadwall have been the primary feathers on the ponds. So far we've not seen any
Screechies in the pond boxes. A Harrier hunted over the field behind the house
today. Daughter, Becky, & I saw a DOWNY going to one of our nest boxes to spend
the night. I have put a lot of wood shaving in the box as well as a "formed"
nest of grass. I put grass in all the boxes for winter as shelter for roosting
birds. Bluebirds seem to check the boxes to know where to roost.

Chickadees, Nuthatches & Downies were unperturbed, taking seeds from the tree
feeders as I was filling them. Becky saw Bluebirds out on the clothesline
today. She has been thrilled to see N. Cardinals since she never saw them where
she lived in CO but did have 4 kinds of hummers at 8,880 ft.!! Mocker is again
"protecting" the juniper/cedar tree from other birds. We saw 6 or 7 Mourning
Doves going to roost in our spruces & lots of ducks going out to the fields to
feed shortly before sunset. The sunset "afterglow" was a great sight as was the
blue sky today.

Welcome back, Meena! Your posts have been missed.
