Bluebird nest box with ¼” wire 4” above bottom results…

I had mentioned in the Spring, that I had replaced all my bluebird boxes
with a new box that had ¼” mesh wire approximately 4” above the floor of the
box and I am extremely happy to report that for the first time we did not
lose one bird to blow flies, including tree swallows.

The nests themselves seemed to stay much dryer and the only maintenance I
had to do was to remove some of the nesting materials that fell or was
pushed beneath the wire mesh.

Having said that I don’t know if it was a bad year for blow flies or if
there were some other factors that I did not account for but it is extremely
encouraging.

I have posted the dimensions and pictures of the boxes at
www.BrokenRoadFarms.com for those who may be interested in building your own
nest boxes.

One other note…one of the pairs of bluebirds nested about 50 yard from our
house and would come to our deck for meal worm on a regular basis…we would
whistle every time we fed them and eventually they would come when we
whistled. Our friends and neighbors enjoyed seeing them up close. And when
the young fledged the parents brought them to the feeder…It was a fun year.

I will report next fall as well.

Happy Birding!
