Three Mute Swans were foraging in shallows about a quarter of mile south of the entrance to Lake Rd. as you leave Rt. 90. The birds were easily viewed from the high bluff as you drive south on Lake Rd. The swans were joined by a small flock of Mallards. Also of interest were several flocks of Common Goldeneyes with 25 to 50 birds per flock; some were easily viewed with binoculars. While observing the Goldeneyes on the bluff behind the Wells College heating plant a Short-eared Owl flew north at eye level against a colorful winter sunset giving me a greater sense of the constant drama of our beloved lake.

Searching for Short-eared Owls along the remainder of Lake Rd. and Rafferty Rd. were not productive.
