Several years ago there was an article in an Ontario journal about merlin prey in a Toronto neighborhood. It was a study undertaken by a high school student. Her findings were disturbing: the merlin was depleting the neighborhood of song birds such as rose-breasted grosbeaks and cardinals. It was bringing several of these and other species to the nest each day. It would be great if we could assume that such birds take mostly house sparrows and starlings, but clearly that was not the case with this bird. I do not recall a single one of either of those species on her list.
