I'm in the Adirondack's and am amazed at the hundreds and hundreds of Yellow-shafted Flickers I am seeing for the past two weeks. They are in flocks of 5-12+ all over Essex and Franklin counties, feeding by road sides through meadows and forests alike.
Are they small foraging groups, which reassemble into large groups for their nocturnal migration? With the dampness and sandy soil up here, there are always plenty of ants to satiate them.
