Greetings. This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of March 30, 
2014 Highlights:-----------
TUNDRA SWANROSS’S GOOSECACKLING GOOSEEURASION WIGEONBLUE-WINGED TEALBLACK

Montezuma National Wildlife Complex (MNWC) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex 
(MWC)------------
     With more open water Waterfowl have arrived at the complex in a big way. 
25 species were noted this week. Rarities will be noted below.     4/2: One 
ROSS’S GOOSE was found among an estimated 10,000 Snow Geese in the Mucklands 
along Rt.31. A PIPIT was also see. At the Main Pool an ICELAND GULL was found.  
   4/3: A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen from East Road. A CACKLING GOOSE was seen at 
the Visitor’s Center.

Derby Hill------------
     A great week at Derby with just over 10,000 hawks counted. On 3/30 a 
ROSS’S GOOSE was seen. 4/3 was the big day with 4,480 hawks counted. Also that 
day a GLAUCOUS GULL and a BLACK VULTURE were seen.

Oswego County------------
     4/2: A BLUE-WINGED TEAL was found in Oswego Harbor.     4/5: 20 TUNDRA 
SWANS were found in Brewerton.

Cayuga County------------
     3/30: A LONG-EARED OWL was heard at Sterling Nature Center.

Onondaga county------------
     3/31: 3 SANDHILL CRANES and a NORTHERN SHRIKE were seen at Threee Rivers 
WMA. A GREAT CORMORANT was seen flying with Double Breasteds from River Road on 
the Oswego River.     4/3: A BONAPARTE’S GULL was seen in Tully. Another great 
day at Three Rivers WMA as a ROSS’S GOOSE, a GOLDEN EAGLE, a GOSHAWK and a 
SANDHILL CRANE were all found.     4/5: A EURASIAN WIGEON was found on Ferstler 
Road in a flooded field near Gerber’s Turf Farm. A BLUE-WINGED TEAL was seen at 
Three Rivers WMA.

Madison County------------
     4/4: A LESSER BLACK-BLACKED GULL was seen on Ditchbank Road.

Oneida County------------
     3/31: A BLUE-WINGED TEAL was seen on Oneida Lake at South Bay.     4/3: A 
SAW-WHET OWL was found in Waterville.
