Turns out it's navigable all the way north to the edge of the pine swamps, about one mile above the beaver dam. I've found a few Wood Ducks and Mallards, but no Grebes yet. Watched a Green Heron catch and devour a frog, and flushed a probable Red-shoulder near the north end.
