Hi Karin. Before moving to western NY seven years ago, I lived in and birded New Mexico for some 30 years. Places to recommend depend greatly on what time of year you plan on going, and what parts of the state are of interest (it's a big state). Some spots like Bosque del Apache NWR, Bitter Lake NWR, and Rattlesnake Springs in Carlsbad Caverns NP are always good, as are numerous others. The 3rd edition of the NM Bird Finding Guide (2002) is available from the NM Ornithological Society. 4th edition should go to press this month. Feel free to contact me off-line if you wish.
