CALL FOR TRAINERS TO WORK ON THE MEDIA PLATFORMS PROJECT
The BBC World Service Trust is looking for experienced trainers and
consultants to work on a project aimed at enhancing media capacity and
programming skills in the Middle East.
The World Service Trust is the international development arm of the
BBC. It manages grant-funded projects worldwide with a particular
emphasis on developing programmes which empower local communities to
make informed decisions and hold their elected representatives to
account.
The Trust’s current initiative in the Middle East is funded by the
Foreign & Commonwealth Office. It aims to create sustainable media
platforms which give marginalised or vulnerable groups the opportunity
to voice their concerns and access alternative opinions. The project
is working across television, radio and the Internet with a view to
reaching diverse audiences in the Arab world.
The project’s training component has two main strands. The first
involves developing the skills of radio journalists in the field of
participatory or debate-based programming. The aim is to help produce
programmes which act as an interface between communities and local
governments in countries such as Yemen, Jordan and Egypt.
The second strand will focus on building bridges between the
mainstream media and the blogging community. In this context, the
Trust will work with active or would-be bloggers to raise awareness of
ethical issues, interactive techniques and technical innovations. It
is anticipated that this will strengthen their potential to act as
credible social commentators and widen their outreach.
Where possible, training will be delivered as a combination of face-to-
face workshops and distance learning or mentoring. Trainers will also
be asked to help develop a body of training materials in Arabic, some
of which will be disseminated through the BBC’s online learning
system, iLearn.
Trainers will work on a part-time, ad hoc basis. Typically,
assignments will last for a minimum of five days and trainers will be
paid an agreed daily rate which includes preparation time.
Across both strands of the training programme, we are looking for
individuals who have the following skills and qualifications:
* At least seven years’ experience as a working journalist or
equivalent experience as a blogger or online activist
* Some experience as a trainer or teacher
* Strong writing and communication skills
* Arabic to native or near-native level
* Strong English-language skills (desirable)
* A broad understanding of the region and the Arab media
The specific openings for trainers and consultants on the project are
listed below. Candidates may apply for one or more of these
opportunities.
News & Current Affairs Trainers
Candidates should have a strong track record in reporting and
programme-making for local or national radio. They will be asked to
deliver training in basic skills such as:
* Journalism ethics (balance, impartiality, objectivity)
* Interviewing
* Use of sources
* News values
* Understanding audiences
These trainers will be working with journalists in challenging
environments where the media is effectively state-controlled. They
should have a good understanding of the constraints placed on local
media professionals in these countries as well as the potential for
introducing qualitative improvements.
Radio Production Trainers
Radio production trainers will be asked to help develop phone-in and
debate programmes for local radio stations across the Arab world.
Candidates should have a long experience of inclusive, participatory
programming with a particular emphasis on outputs which facilitate
dialogue between communities and the authorities. Core aspects of this
training will include:
* Presentation and moderation skills
* Editorial guidelines
* Managing studio guests and listeners
* Developing proper relationships with the authorities
* Building trust with audiences
* Following up on issues raised
This training will take the form of on-site consultancy, with trainers
working at all levels of the editorial hierarchy. Initial training
sessions will be supplemented by programme mentoring, some of which
will be conducted on a remote basis. The idea is to build long-term
supportive relationships between individual consultants and
beneficiary stations.
Online Course Writers, Trainers and Mentors
Specialists from across the region will be commissioned to write
Arabic-language modules for iLearn. Ideally these individuals will
also deliver face-to-face training and online mentoring in the subject
areas covered by the online material. In particular, we are looking
for candidates with the following experience:
* Newspaper journalism
* Blogging and web-based social activism
* Web journalism
* Managing and encouraging user-generated content
* Online multi-media projects (including video, podcasts and
animation)
* Open source software and Web 2.0
All iLearn courses offer trainees the opportunity to interact with an
online mentor. In general terms, mentors evaluate specific assignments
designed to test the extent to which the trainees have assimilated new
skills and knowledge. Mentors give feedback to trainees via the iLearn
system but can also enter into ad hoc web-based discussions on key
issues raised by the modules.
How to apply
Individuals interested in any (or all) of these opportunities are
invited to send an up-to-date version of their CV to the following
email address: [email protected]. The project team will then
shortlist a total of 30-35 candidates who will be asked to complete a
written test and, in some cases, take part in a telephone interview.
Of these, a total of 16 potential trainers will attend a five-day
workshop aimed at developing training skills and at building an
understanding of the project’s key objectives. Participants will work
with BBC consultants to develop specific course programmes and a range
of learning resources.
The candidates who show the greatest potential during the workshops
will be given the opportunity to deliver a range of training
assignments over the project’s two-year lifecycle.
