DUBAI - Yahoo! will launch an online competition on June 28 with the help of an Egyptain non-profit to foster social entrepreneurship among young Egyptians. Yahoo!, keen to expand in the Arab world with its recent acquisition of Maktoob.com, said on Thursday it would invite individuals from across Egypt to be the next social entrepreneurs of the year by developing new ideas that have a positive impact on the lives of Egyptians in the categories of education, health, environment and a wildcard category. Yahoo! had announced in April that it planned to spend $500,000 on the online initiative in collaboration with Nahdet El Mahrousa (Renaissance of Egypt). Egypt has the Arab World’s largest internet population with 16.5 million users. The competition is open to entrepreneurs aged 21 to 35, Yahoo! said, adding that about $250,000 will be awarded as grants to the winners. "Yahoo!’s announcement to acquire Maktoob last year shined the spotlight on tech entrepreneurs in the Arab world and the incredible potential and talent in the region that is largely untapped,” Ahmed Nassef, managing director of Yahoo! Middle East, said in a statement. “This partnership with Nahdet El Mahrousa continues our commitment to invigorate and grow the Internet market in the Middle East as a whole and will enable the next wave of tech entrepreneurs from Egypt to realize their dreams. We can’t wait to see their innovative ideas.” For mroe details on the competition, visit http://eg.socialinnovation.yahoo.com. Nahdet El Mahrousa is an Egyptian youth-led non-governmental organisation, established in November 2003 and acts a vehicle for social innovation. Global media business leaders in February urged Arab leaders to foster creativity and entrepreneurship in their media sectors. At the Abu Dhabi Media Summit, they said less than one percent of Internet content is in Arabic and that needs to change to allow the region’s internet penetration to grow.
