Dear Ahmed, thanks for sharing your experiance with us. you are right that the egyptian publishers are not familier with the CC L at all. i believe this is the case of the rest of the Arab publishers also but why do not you try Hindawi publisher. they even have an open access links for some books.
unfortunatly, I cannot help in the funding issue as I myself although work at the Library Of Alexnadira but yet have no pence for my a2K project (CC is part of it) and have to work extra time to maintain the website www.bibalex.org/a2k . however, why do not you contact the IDRC regional office in Cairo and the OSI regional office in Amman. the CC L for Egypt soon will be ready and hope we'll have a big launch where we can invite some creators and publishers to explain to them what CC L and hope someone from the Int. publishers association can attend and explain to the local publishers that using CC L will not be a threat to their business. kind regards, Hala ----- Original Message ---- From: Ahmed M. AbouZaid. I'm from Egypt and I'm interested in free technologies and free culture. First of all, I would like to thank Creative Commons organization for their remarkable effort in spreading free culture and creativity. We are all better off by the great role that you are holding. My story started two years ago when I released Arabic an e-book called "The Practical Guide in using Ubuntu Linux" and it was licensed under a CC-BY-NC-SA license. That book was, and continues to be, the first complete Arabic book that explains Ubuntu operating system to new users. The book received an excellent adaptation rate and many users gave good feedbacks. And although I didn't work well enough on publicizing it, I managed to count more than 15,000 downloads. Now I am in the process of updating the book in order to release the second edition under a CC-BY-SA license. I am planning to make it available in print as well as digitally, but I have noticed a major issue in publishing it in paper and that was the fact that publishers do not accept free licenses like Creative Commons' (they don't even accept restrictive licenses like CC-BY-NC-SA). This will mean a couple of unfortunate things, the first is that no PDF version is going to be available for download and the second is that the printed version will come with a giant 'All rights reserved' in the first of the book. I don't want to be forced into doing either of these. I want to make my book free-as-in-freedom so people can share it and base new, creative works upon it. This is going to be the first book about Ubuntu in Egypt and the Arab World. In addition to that, as far I as know, it is going to be the first commercial book licensed under a Creative Commons license in Egypt and the Arab Word. This will hopefully mean that people will recognize the Creative Commons organization and will see how Creative Commons can be used in real world. Recently, a friend of mine told me about the funding that Creative Commons provides for free culture projects[1], but unfortunately, I didn't find out about it early enough. Now, I am wondering about the possibility of getting funds from Creative Commons for my project. If that is not possible, how about the possibility of kicking a fundraise in cooperation with Creative Commons to collect funds from free culture supporters around the world? I do not know the exact cost, but I think it will cost $2200-3000 (that does not only include printing, but also proofreading, writing and publishing). Also, as a little way to give back, %25 of the total revenues of the book will be spent on international free software projects. Any more ideas? thanks : ) [1] http://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/23406 -- Ahmed M.
