As of late there has been a growing resentment between musicians and the
German collecting society, GEMA. With no other collecting society for
music available, GEMA has exerted their monopoly hold on the market by
implementing questionable tariffs on nightclubs, DJs and producers within
the country. With no alternatives left for rights holders, they have
restricted producers from releasing and licensing music creatively, which
has in turn has effected how consumers can access music. But, there is an
alternative; C3S, a non-exclusive collecting society that want to
challenge the current system, and allow people to release their music
under a Creative Commons non-commercial license. To find out more, we
spoke to Daniel Bruder, one of the founders for C3S.
