Hi It's a design that a VTP client should receive the Vlans from a VTP Server. This is to reduce the administrative load. So basically if you have for example 5 switches and one you can make as a VTP Server and others as clients. Then the common vlans you plan for your network can be created on the vtp server and once you make your trunks up (by default ISL is UP, when you connect a cross cable between 2 switches) the VTP advertisement (containing vlan information) will be sent by the vtp server to all clients and all vtp client switches will receive it. Here only you need to give the port memberships for those vlans, thereby you reduce the load of creating all vlans in all switches.
Note: A VTP Server can create,delete Vlans. A VTP client cannot create,delete vlans, but can receive and forward vtp advertisements. A VTP transparent sw can create,delete vlans (but only local vlans) cannot participate in VTP advertisements, but it will forward it to another sw. Then later on, it was requested that one of the switches be a VTP Client. When I changed the mode to "Client" it lost the few vlans that it initially had and learned the vlans advertised by the Server. My question is: Is there a way in an scenario like this to preserve the vlans after you change the mode to client? Is there a "vlan database" or "config mode" workaround for this? The only way I was able to keep the vlans was by setting the switch back to Server, let it replicate its local vlans to the other one (future only VTP Server) and then change the switch back to Client. Pretty much this will cause the client to learn the vlans that it originally had locally configured from its Server. Did I do that right? Is there another way to do this?
