If you guys haven't been following the Ask the Expert By Maurilio Gorito
Here are a few Highlights.

Hi Gaurav,

The routers have 2 LAN ports, usually fast Ethernet, and 2 serial ports. You
might have a additional router to be your FR switch. We use 24 port switches
so it allows us to have a full back-to-back connections between the switches
and have all routers LAN ports connected as well.

Hi,

You are correct, the 3725 routers and 3550 still on v3.0 and will be gone on
v4.0. Also the 1841 will be added in v4.0. The fact on preparation is that
you can still preparing to v4.0 using the current v3.0 devices.

The SecureCRT we are using is v3.0 and there is no plan of upgrading or
change it at the moment.

Hi Gaurav,

The number of exact devices might change from lab exam to lab exam that is
why we don't give the exact number of them or model. The minimum number of
router you should consider is 5 and it can be either two 3825s and three
1841s or two 1841s and three 3825s. The switches I'd recommend four 3560s.

In regarding the IOS I recommend you to use the latest available 12.4(T) for
the routers and the latest 12.2 for the switches.

The Open ended questions are done on the computer by yourself, so no Proctor
will be interviewing you.

Maurilio

Hello,

During the lab exam you will have access to the documentation online at

Hi Maurilio.

Are you able to tell us about the keyboards that you use in the labs? I know
it sounds a little pedantic to ask but I think if I am confronted with a
different keyboard layout in the lab it will slow me down quite a lot. I
have my lab booked for Brussels, if you are able to say what the keyboard
make/model and language layout is it would help me very much.

Thank you
Simon

Hi Simon,

We use logitec qwerty keyboard and the language is English.

Maurilio,

First of all, thanks for the chance to communicate with the actual CCIE lab
exam developer!

Next, could you please confirm my understanding of the new exam format and
grading procedures:

As I see it, the exam consists of three section. A candidate must obtain the
PASS mark in *every* section in order to pass the exam.

Sections:

(1) Open Ended Questions (OEQ) (0.5 hours): 3 questions in total; A
candidate needs to answer two questions out of three correctly to get the
PASS mark in this section. The results are graded by a human. A total of 30
minutes are allocated to finish this section.

(2) Troubleshooting Section (2 hours). A configuration is loaded in the
candidate's rack, and the candidate is presented with a troubleshooting
scenario, formatted as a series of trouble-tickets. Additionally, L2, L3 IGP
diagrams are presented for reference.
Every ticket has a point allocation. The results are graded by the
verification script and confirmed by a human. A relative score of 80% must
be obtained to get the PASS mark for this section.

(3) Configuration Section (5,5 hours). A new scenario, different from the
one presented during the Troubleshooting section is presented to the
candidate. The formatting is similar to the old exam, with the tasks, point
allocation, diagrams and so on.
The approximate number of tasks here is 25-30. The section results are
graded by the verification script and confirmed by a human. A relative score
of 80% must be obtained to get the PASS mark for this section.

A candidate may finish every section in advance and move forward to the next
section. However, the candidate is not allowed to return to any previous
section.

And I still have some questions to ask you:

Q1: How many tickets should a candidate expect during the troubleshooting
section?
Q2: Is the old rule "80 point of 100" no longer valid? Many people assume
the new exam has the following point allocation: OEQ (21), Troubleshooting +
Configuration (79).
Q3: As for MPLS VPN topics, what is the extent covered in the new blueprint?
Will advanced scenarios such as CsS, Inter-AS VPN, MPVN, MPLS TE be included
as well?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Petr Lapukhov, CCIE#16379 (R&S/Security/SP/Voice)

Hi Petr,

Your overall assumptions are correct and very well put. Below just a few
clarifications:

1. The Open Ended Questions are 4 questions total and the candidate needs to
get at least three out of four.

2. The total score of the CCIE lab exam still 100 points, now divided
between the three sections. At this point I can't disclose the exact point
allocation per section but you can expect the Configuration section to have
between 25-30 questions and the Troubleshooting section to have between 10
to 15 trouble-tickets.

3. Regarding of MPLS we are planning to cover the basic configurations on
label switching, VRFs and L3VPN. No advanced scenarios will be part of the
exam.
