I previously ran GNS3 and had similar issues.  A friend suggested that I get
a 2651XM IOS (adv IP w/ crypto) and run only the 2600 routers.  2600s work
well and truly have most needed options.  The reason to use 2600s is the
small IOS size.  Other tricks to try - UNZIP the .bin file before adding it
to the router as the IOS - it saves RAM and processor by doing this.  Also,
as suggested, make sure to optimize your idlePC value.
