I will say that after getting my CCNA, CCNP, CCDA and CCDP in college and within the first year after graduating, and then spending 10 years working in various areas of the networking industry, and THEN getting serious about the CCIE I have to wonder if just plowing into the IE when I was previously sharp on all this stuff would have been good.
On the other hand, 10 years of real-world experience, career development, and general maturity does a lot to help one head down this road. I will be 32 next spring when I take my first crack at the lab. It's probably like having kids... There are only a few "wrong" times and no "right" times to do it.
