I did something similar, my BB are older boxes (4500 also a frame relay switch,
a 7206 vxr with 12.1 ios) the only time I ran int problems with IPX was when I
had to do the fast hellos on a bb router (the 4500 did not support that) and a
weird scenario when I had to force MPLS to use passwords without using the MPLS
neighbor password command, the 3745 I was using did not support the newer MPLS
command, but I tested the command on my 7206 vxr with the later IOS just to see
if I can see the commands. it worked just fine there.

The only problems I have and worry about is the hidden commands that you will
not see in context sensitive help or see in the docs. I am concerned that will
appear in the real lab.

Anyone know what switch configs are not supported on the 3550 that are
supported on the 3650?

I  have one 3750, one 4948, one 4510 and one 7613 in my lab that I use for
switching, so far I have not run into anything that I could not do at layer 2
on those switches. I have had scenarios that I could not complete but they were
related to routing.

+1

Steve has the right idea. I had 2x 3560's I got on the cheap, but didn't
really wanna spend  $2000 for another pair, so I got 2x 3550's for $220 and
upgraded them to the ipservices image and I have been able complete almost
all of the IPX labs that I have been through.

Now the backbone routers are a different story. I'm sure I'll hear a few
pitchforks coming my way by the time I finish this message, but I use a
Juniper M10 split into very many VRF's which are broken out into dot1q
trunks to simulate the 3 BB routers. I also have a spare 2610 (non XM)
plugged in just in case I have a lab with a BB router that needs EIGRP,
ODR, etc.

Hey, it gets the job done :)
