Sorry Marc, It would help if I read things more clearly that negotiating trunks is still what you're looking to do :)
Still I would consider checking all the relevant interfaces on both sides of the links - switchport mode dynamic desirable most likely is what you do want to be using - if this fails it will drop back to an access port, Fa0/23 on both sides may be worth investigating.
