if you can get the Sun quad nics (rather than the D-links) use them. they
are PCI-X so longer then a standard pci slot but they still work. i used 3
in my virtual rack going to real switches and had no trouble with unbuntu
(strange lockups you were having) i use xubunutu as it is much lighter
weight then standard.
