I finished my CCNP in November 2011 and shortly after started studying for my CCIE.
The more I studied the more I learned how little I knew. My first attempt will be in October and I can tell you I do not believe I will be ready; however, I have my reasons for going through it anyway. The vendors have schedules for you to follow to complete their respective training packages. See if you can fill out a schedule of time that goes with one of these. I started in December and have fallen behind my schedule. Other than a 2-week break for our daughter's vacation I am now putting in 3-4 hours a night and 8-24 hours on the weekend. I still don't think I will be ready in October. Realistically, I'm thinking March would be a good month to really go for it. I will know better after my October experience. Bottom line is make a detailed schedule and then you will have an idea how involved it is. But, you won't really know until you start doing the labs. When people say it takes a week to do a lab, that is not an exaggeration and that is putting time in every night to do the lab and learn and understand the things around the lab. I'm on lab 10 and I don't remember what I did in lab 1. Hopefully, though, the next time through the labs it will go smoother because I do remember a lot of the gotcha's. Heinz Ulm has a list of books that is good. There again when you first start you won't dive deep into the books, but the more you begin to understand and question things the deeper you will dive into the books. Equipment depends on whether you want to spend money or not. Do some google searches as you'll see there is the GNS3 camp and the physical rack camp. You have to choose what is best for you. Also search some of the CCIE blogs and forums out there of people who have been on the CCIE journey. That will also help to show you the roads that are available. Cheers!
