Dear HSRP help in such a way that it provides us, FAILOVER, REDUNDANCY and PREEMPTION.
We configure here Active and Standby Nodes by using a Virtual IP Address which will point to both the Active and Standy Nodes. The reason why we use Virtual IP address is, Suppose we have 500 Nodes and they are connected to the Active Router, What if Active goes down so how we can change the gateway on those 500 Nodes to the standby, so to do the things automatically we use Virtual IP address which will point to both Active and Standby and is from that specific Subnet. We have two router (A as Active & B as Standby) A: interface Ethernet1/0 ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 standby 1 ip 192.168.1.100 standby 1 priority 105 standby 1 preempt B: interface Ethernet1/0 ip address 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 standby 1 ip 192.168.1.100 standby 1 priority 100 standby 1 preempt Now A is Active and if it goes down so B will goes into Active and in case of return of A the preempt will bring it back to Active state. The virtual IP which will be used as Gateway is 192.168.1.100.
