On a switch, nothing. Config is stored in flash:/config.text. If you delete or rename this file it's the same as a 'write erase'. This is actually part of the password recovery procedure.
On routers, the startup config is kept in NVRAM. On newer routers, the NVRAM is actually a piece/partition of the flash, but historically in very old routers, I believe the NVRAM was actually a separate chip, totally separate from Flash (hence it only being 128K or 192K typically). So the NVRAM:/startup-config and NVRAM:/running-config are the actual files that are modified in copy or delete functions. Bob -- Sent from my iPhone, please excuse any typos.
