hm...does that mean that the order of commands matter?

Should we not put the vtp version 2 command as the first command on all switches? Default is version1.

That way, neither one can override the other. It's not an
authentication issue.

Hi all,

I am almost embarrassed to post this, but in the spirit of “the
only stupid question, is the one you don’t ask….”, here is what I did in a lab:

SW1

Hostname Switch1

Vtp mode server

Vtp domain ipexpert

Vtp password ipexpert

Vtp version 2

Exit

Vlan 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

Exit

End

Wr

ON SW2 – SW4

Hostname Switch[2-4]

Vtp mode client

Vtp domain ipexpert

Vtp password ipexpert

Vtp version 2

exit

ON ALL 4 SWITCHES

Default int fast0/19

Default int fast0/20

Default int fast0/21

Default int fast0/22

Default int fast0/23

Default int fast0/24

Int r f0/19 – 24

Shut

Sw tru en dot

Sw mo tru

Sw non

No shut

All trunks came up (sho int trunk), sh vtp pass on all
switches showed correct password (and they were all pasted in from the same line on notepad), show vtp status showed all info you’d expect, but SW2 – SW4
showed an “MD5 error” on all trunks.

Vlans were not propagated from SW1. I bounced trunks, I converted to transparent mode and back to client or server as appropriate.I changed domains to a dummy
value then back again. Nothing made any
difference.

Eventually, I reload all four switches, and that fixed it.

My question is: what exactly causes this MD5 error, other
than the passwords being different? Is
there anything I missed? George
