I have looked at the topology and your explanation.

I am looking at MelonHQ and MelonBranch to start with.  With no sham-link
in place when you apply show ip ospf database what LSAs do you see?  Do you
see any LSA type 3?  I am imagining you should see them in the database but
in the route table you should only see O routes provided backdoor link and
customer site used Area 0 altogether.
Once you break the backdoor link, the type 3 LSA from the database should
appear in the route table as IA.

Is this what you see?  Sorry if you have answered such questions before.
