Hi all,
Can anyone suggest a way to remember the different options in Frame Relay
Traffic Shaping? Is history a good way to look at this?
I findd the documentation on the Cisco 12.4T config guide a bit confusing.
Traffic shaping for FR is in the configuring frame relay section of the Cisco
IOS WAN configuration guide. The traffic shape link says to switch on
traffic-shape on the interface and use commands such as frame-relay
traffic-rate in a map class.
If policing is needed, the commands on the documentation are things like
frame-relay cir, frame-relay bc, etc.
But in the map-class section of the documentation I have things like cir,
mincir. and I can use a class map for both polcing and shaping. In the example
of the documentation all the different options seems to be usable for both,
shaping and policing.
Is there are an ordered way to remember all this and how to know when to use
what?
For example if the task asks to make sure that the spoke don't send to the hub
more than 512K of traffic, how do I know if I need to use policing or shaping?
I suppose shaping would be a better option (I don't drop traffic), but policing
would technically speaking meet the requirement. Let's say I go for shaping,
why would I use traffic-rate instead frame-relay cir mincir in a map-class and
vice-versa?
Fulvio
