I used a linux server with "screen" or "tmux" or "byobu" from which to do
my sessions in many cases, so if my connection to the server got killed I
could just re-attach to the screen session and pick back up.

For remote access to my lab I typically used AnyConnect to my ASA, or SSH
directly to that lab server over an obscure port number using one of the
linux packages that will block any IP that has more than 3 failed login
attempts or whatever (I used DenyHosts).
