What I normally do is try the master index first. It helps if you know the command you're looking for but in the case I would look for something starting with logging.
In the master index I found a number of items that started with logging xxxx. Most of them referred to either SBCU or ESM. So the next thing I do is look them up. SBCU = Cisco Unified Border Element (SP Edition) Command Reference: Unified Model ESM = had no listing in 12.4T, 12.4M, and 12.3 has been removed so I went hunting for it in the command guides Best reference I could find was = Cisco IOS Embedded Syslog Manager Command Reference I could not really find anything in the configuration guides but I was able to find some information under the command reference of the ESM. There I could find the different logging levels but to be honest the quick way for me would be to do a "logging console ?". Rack1R1(config)#logging console ? <0-7> Logging severity level alerts Immediate action needed (severity=1) critical Critical conditions (severity=2) debugging Debugging messages (severity=7) discriminator Establish MD-Console association emergencies System is unusable (severity=0) errors Error conditions (severity=3) filtered Enable filtered logging guaranteed Guarantee console messages informational Informational messages (severity=6) notifications Normal but significant conditions (severity=5) warnings Warning conditions (severity=4) xml Enable logging in XML <cr> As for find out what level a fan failure is I was unable to find anything about that. If you want to know what a interface log was you could just shut an interface down and look at the console message. Rack1R1(config)#inter gig 0/0 Rack1R1(config-if)#shut Rack1R1(config-if)# *Oct 5 22:03:58.635: %PIM-5-NBRCHG: neighbor 132.1.17.7 DOWN on interface GigabitEthernet0/0 DR *Oct 5 22:03:58.635: %PIM-5-DRCHG: DR change from neighbor 132.1.17.7 to 132.1.17.1 on interface GigabitEthernet0/0 *Oct 5 22:03:58.651: %OSPF-5-ADJCHG: Process 1, Nbr 150.1.7.7 on GigabitEthernet0/0 from FULL to DOWN, Neighbor Down: Interface down or detached *Oct 5 22:03:58.655: %BGP-5-ADJCHANGE: neighbor 132.1.17.7 Down Interface flap Rack1R1(config-if)# *Oct 5 22:04:00.639: %LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface GigabitEthernet0/0, changed state to administratively down *Oct 5 22:04:01.639: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface GigabitEthernet0/0, changed state to down Rack1R1(config-if)#no shut *Oct 5 22:06:08.599: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface GigabitEthernet0/0, changed state to up Rack1R1(config-if)# Here you can see the port going down is a level 5 - which is a notification. I found it interesting that the port going up is a level 3. I'm trying to figure out where on the Doc CD I can find specific logging messages and their logging level. I imagine if I look in the right place there has to be a page that will tell me a fan failure is level X and an interface up/down is level Y. A little help please, because I haven't had any luck. _______________________________________________ For more information regarding industry leading CCIE Lab training, please visit <http://www.ipexpert.com> www.ipexpert.com Are you a CCNP or CCIE and looking for a job?
