The decision to stick with physical gear related directly to CML's
inability to support detailed scripting. We need topologies that can be
adapted to our specific training and protocol needs to minimize the amount
of time between configuration and topological changes. Additionally, we did
not want to have our entire delivery model at the mercy of Cisco's
production and release schedule for VIRL/CML.

Our goal is to optimize the amount of time a student spends focused on
actual labs rather than getting ready to perform labs and physical hardware
seemed to best and most easily managed solution to those specific needs.

Hope this helps with your confusion.
