Hi Tony,

I am currently running a single server with 2 quad core CPUs (and therefore
64bit - a must for ESX) and 8gb of ram. I'm running ESX and I have 1 TB of
drive space. I can run CUCM-PUB w/2-CPUs and 2GB of ram assigned. My
CUCM-SUB is set up the same way. CUPS, and CUX set up the same way. I have a
W2K3 server for UCCX and DNS.

I only run what I need at the time but have had all running at the same time
and performance was acceptable for a lab. I am currently installing UCCX so
that's an unknown as far as performance but I think it will be OK.
I can adjust the CPUs assigned before boot up based on where I do or don't
need the speed.

I bought this no name server off of craigslist.com locally for $500. It does
have an Intel m/b.

So this works but my CPUs are only 1.6ghz if I could change this without
spending a lot of money I would. Each of the Cisco installs required 85GB of
drive space so 1TB should be enough for the server.

Another thing to keep in mind is power consumption. I considered multiple
servers but that would have been even more noisy and used a lot more
electric. When I first started powering up the lab with the server my normal
$400 PG&E bill shot up to $600 and I learned to turn on only what I need and
don't leave it turned on without being used.

I'm uncertain how some of the other guys are handling this problem. I will
be interested in their responses as well.

Hope this helps and good luck with your studies and remember to enjoy the
journey.

Larry
