I don't have any idea if this will work or not, but placing an xml:space="preserve" attribute on the <project> element might help. It's supposed to inform the XML parser that whitespace in the value is significant. The default parser behavior is to strip any leading and trailing whitespace and compact and contiguous whitespace characters down to 1.
