Dear Simon
You mean that it is OK to be 'eMail browsing' just because it is the
window of your mail client; eventually 'loosing' time on subject
which is of no interest to you (or at least which is not 'an
important' subject : the kind you're reading when you have time to
spear)?
While it is not OK to spend the same amount of time with browsing the
web...
I guess the thing is that there are also messages which are much more
important to us than the ones from CCP4BB, that's why we're 'hooked'
up on eMail client, hence having CCP4BB as a eMail list is a way to
'parasitise' our behaviour of keeping an eye on the eMails.
I say 'parasitise', because if one's is making consciously the choice
of following up CCP4BB closely, then the time involved is the same
what-ever the window is (eMail vs. WWW browser)...
Now, one point I see in FAVOUR of the eMail, is that (when you're
using a laptop) it is nice to have access to the 'list' without
having a IP connection, hence you can look at 'old' messages you have
not looked at during the day, or even when you're "on the road" you
can still benefit the wisdom of the archives, provided you keep the
mail of the BB...
My 2 euro-cents on the subject.
Serge.

Dear all,
I am not sure of Kevin's analysis. I think I would be quite
capable of
looking at such a board, it is just that I would never actually do
it as
there is always something else to do that is more pressing. The
current
system alerts us all to interesting issues, but many of us do not
have the
time to do much sitting and web browsing, so would only tend to
look at it
if we have a problem (or time on our hands). I think it would be a
major
loss (at least to me).
