Below is what I've thought would make a good, but inexpensive, 3D
system (not had the opportunity to try all the parts out though):



Edimensional glasses (not compatible with the old Stereographics
goggles and emitters - dunno the exact wavelengths, but from visual
appearance of the LEDs they are different)

35 ft emitter: http://www.3dflightsim.com/product/product_index.htm (yes, you 
need high powered emitters for long range)

GFX: I've heard of people making cheap gaming cards work for 3D (note:
if you're using Linux, in think you need to make sure that stereo works
for OpenGL, not Direct3D). As has been mentioned before, some of the
Nvidia Quadro FX cards are great and easy to setup in Linux, and not
too expensive. 

Projector: DepthQ is inexpensive as far as "3D" projectors go, but
there are forums which mention run of the mill projectors working
perfectly well in 3D.



I'm sure there are people who have more detailed info on this subject.
