*PhD Position: Structural biology of protein-protein interactions in the muscle Z-disk*

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to work on structural characterization of important protein complexes centered on major players of the Z-disk of striated muscle: alpha-actinin and filamin. Binary and higher complexes with interacting partners or domains of interacting partners will be produced for structural analysis. The individual proteins or their domains planned for this study are already available in a form of clone or expressed protein. An integrated approach will be adopted to gain structural information on target complexes, by using complementary structural biology techniques.

The successful applicant will work in the Group of Kristina Djinovic Carugo at the Department of Biomolecular Structural Chemistry at Max F. Perutz Laboratories, University of Vienna, in a stimulating scientific environment of Campus Vienna Biocenter. The Department is equipped to carry out all steps from gene cloning, to structural analysis including X-ray diffraction facility, biomolecular NMR facilities, and a series of biophysical and optical spectroscopy techniques. The Group has access to the high throughput nano-drop crystallisation and crystal imaging robotics operational as well as to major European synchrotron high brilliance X-ray sources.

*Qualifications and experience: *Candidates should have a recent Masters degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Biophysics or related. Skills in either molecular biology or protein chemistry & purification or protein crystallography would be an asset.

*Closing date:* Review of applications begins *December 5^th , 2008* and will continue until the position is filled.

To apply for this position, please email a detailed CV, description of research experience and interests; arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent to Kristina Djinovic Carugo via email < [EMAIL PROTECTED] <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>>.
